Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Darian Davis

SAGU's demolition of Huston-Tillotson directed by JJ Boling

November 5, 2022

Waxahachie, TX: Saturday afternoon at the Sheaffer Center, the men's basketball team of Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) matched up against Huston-Tillotson University. The Lions would resort to their bench for the additional energy required to battle and prevail on the last day of back-to-back game days.

Lion Review

  • Tyler Kinghorn would commence the hoop action with a turnaround jumper that he nailed just inside the paint and over the defense's extended hands. Chants of "Go Psycho T, Go" erupted from the Lion's home crowd.

  • Cortland Blake's jump shot would give SAGU an early 14-5 lead before the first substitutions.

  • When Dallas Smith and JJ Boling joined the game, Alerick Hall, the Lions' floor general, assisted them by handing them passes that resulted in back-to-back made three-pointers.

  • SAGU's second unit would maintain the advantage, and when the starters came back, the incredibly brilliant defensive performance persisted.

  • Before the half, SAGU limited Huston-Tillotson to only 27.0% of its field goal attempts.

  • Philbert Weekes, the Lions' ultimate rebounding machine, grabbed nine of his game-high 12 rebounds in the second half of the contest.

  • JJ Boling was a marksman who continued to make three-point attempts, and the freshman guard was a deadeye from beyond the arc. The Huston-Tillotson defense struggled against Boling because of his shooting prowess and quickness around the hoop.

  • With an alley-oop jam, Keenan Gooden would cap the Lions' dominance. As his teammates, coaches, and supporters cheered him on from the stands, Keenan Gooden clung to the rim like a spider on a web.

  • When Tyson Pine checked in, he would make two three-pointers.

  • JJ Boling was the top scorer with 15 points. 13 more points came from Brooks Haddock.

Deal's Declaration

"Incredible performance as a group today! Contributions across the board. Great execution and a lot of joy. We talked about playing together and playing with joy, and today was a great example of what that can look like. I'm really proud of this team for the effort on back-to-back nights," SAGU head men's basketball coach Delton Deal said.
