Belcher is unblockable as SAGU defeats Wayland in a major defense-themed victory

October 29, 2022

Plainview, TX: The Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) football squad traveled to Plainview, Texas, to take on the Wayland Baptist University (WBU) Pioneers at the Greg Sherwood Memorial Bulldog Stadium. The Lions understood they would need to play purposefully and pointedly for their final away game in the Sooner Athletic Conference (SAC) on Saturday afternoon on a mostly sunny day. Wayland (2-6, 2-5) suffered its fourth straight loss as a result of SAGU (5-3, 4-3), who held a slim 3-0 lead at the half but scored 17 points in the third quarter and ten more in the fourth.

Lion Review

  • When the game initially commenced, Keaton Dudik, SAGU's standout running back, would be used to pound the Wayland defense to the ground. The Pioneer's security was breached by Dudik's deadly swift feet and the front five's devoted blocking.

  • The "one job crew" kicker for SAGU, Kieran Woodley, would succeed on a field goal try, and by doing so, he was able to prevent a near standstill in the first half of play.

  • Before the first half of play ended, quarterback Briley Green threw an incredible ball to Paul Odidi, who snagged the athletic completion. This was a positive indicator for the SAGU passing play in the second half of the game.

  • Keandre Belcher overpowered the Wayland offensive line by smashing through blocks to gobble up run plays and even reading a screenplay and tripping a receiver with the aid of his superior intelligence.

  • Zackariah Johnson moved the chains significantly with a 59-yard reception, and brother Zachary Johnson would end the drive with an 11-yard touchdown as the twin brothers demonstrated their incredible receiving abilities.

  • Keandre Belcher led the game with seven tackles and five solos. His performance was why Wayland's offense, which finished with seven first downs and 187 yards, could not establish any momentum. With one interception, Pioneers quarterbacks completed 11 of their 33 passes to nine different receivers.

  • Briley Green completed 23 passes for 342 yards and three touchdowns, with the deepest one going for 59 yards.

Ellis' Edition

"Today, our football team took a much-needed step toward becoming a better team. It was also good to look into the stands and see our fans make it to an away game, especially the last away game for our seniors.." SAGU football head coach Greg Ellis said.
