Waxahachie, TX: The Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) football squad returned to their home field of Lumpkins Stadium in Waxahachie, Texas, to take on the Texas College (TC) Steers. The Sooner Athletic Conference (SAC) Offensive Player of the Week for the week of October 10-16, 2022, Steer Quarterback Isaiah Sadler, a freshman from Princeton, Texas, would be a focal point for the SAGU defense, which has allowed zero scores against them in their last two games. The game would also be a quasi-reunion for SAGU football's head coach Greg Ellis, who was most recently the head football coach and athletic director at Texas College.
The SAGU Lions (6-3, 5-3) defeated the Texas College Steers in a tense contest behind the swagger of star running back Keaton Dudik. Dudik led his team to victory with another 300+ yard running performance and three touchdowns.
Lion Review
-
After kicking off to the Texas College Steers, the Lions would force a fast three and out. The defensive line pressure from Keandre Belcher, Jayden Chappel, Isaiah Moore, and Joseph Chavez established the tone, and it warned the Steers that they were in for a physically demanding, prolonged game.
-
Paul Odidi would burst down the sideline to catch a fade route for his first catch of the game; the Texas College defensive back was unable to restrain the receiver due to his quick feet and loose hips.
-
It would be simple for the Lion's offense to gallop down the field and advance the chains. As a result of the position they had gained, Kieran Woodley would score the game's opening field goal.
-
The SAGU defense's back half chose to show off their hunger as they returned to the field. Kepatrick Magee impeded a long run by the Steers from entering the end zone, which allowed Jaylon Moss to split the Steers' young quarterback into pieces and cause a fumble. Damaris Herron immediately dove in to recover the loose ball.
-
Keaton Dudik started to get into his stride and used a vicious hop step to evade a defender on a carry that led to another Woodley field goal.
-
Texas College would come roaring back to score, but Dudik would answer Steer's touchdown with his own score. The first quarter of the game featured a flurry of quick scoring.
-
After receiving a handoff from the three-yard line all the way into the end zone, Dudik would once more find himself in the SAGU football record books recording the school's longest-ever rushing touchdown.
-
Only five points separated the Lions' lead at the interval.
-
The second half was a rotation for Zach Nelson, Isaac Gowdy, and Jaylan Moss to intercept the Steer quarterback. The defensive backs put on a defending masterclass by jamming receivers on the line with their brute power, closing gaps with their quickness, and reading plays with their animal-like determination and intensity.
-
Keandre Belcher concluded the game with his second consecutive seven-tackle effort, putting consistent pressure on the Steers' offensive line using his bully strength. KePatrick MaGee finished the game with six tackles after hawking down the opponent.
-
The day's headliner would be Keaton Dudik. The running back enhanced his already legendary season with yet another epic performance. Dudik gained 302 yards and three touchdowns on 38 carries. Dudik's feet were moving too quickly for defenders to keep up with him, and if they did, he would refuse to stop, turning the initial collision into additional yards.
Ellis' Edition
"We had a tough game against a highly motivated Texas College football club. A special thanks to our fans for their support and for cheering us to victory. I give credit to Texas College for playing a good game. Even though we did not play our best game, I am so proud of our players and coaches for finding a way to pull it off. With this win, we are officially bowl-eligible. We need all the SAGU alums, current students, and their families/friends to attend our last regular season home game. During this game, we will honor our seniors, and it will be great if all the SAGU supporters join us. Again thank you for your support." SAGU football head coach Greg Ellis said.
