Waxahachie, TX: The Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) Lions played the No. 1 Mid-America Christian University (MACU) Evangels at Waxahachie High School in their second Sooner Athletic Conference (SAC) home game.SAGU men's soccer head coach Clementin Oancea emphasized team discipline, the application of solid doses of communication, and high attentiveness during the game's pregame meetings and warmups to neutralize their top-ranked adversary.
A player for MACU that the Lions would have to account for especially is Evangel's leading scorer, NAIA All-American Rodrigo Albuquerque. Entering the contest, Albuquerque had six goals and three assists for 15 points on 33 shots in the 2022 season.
Lions Review
-
Early in the game, Jafet Ramirez would deny Evangel control from a MACU squad trying to create inside positions for shots on the Lions' goal by using short passes.
-
Jose Ladoriel would effectively communicate with his defensive backline to repeatedly block MACU attackers, rendering the Evangel corner kicks ineffectual.
-
Juan Ambriz would be encouraged to harness his talent for aggressive play by SAGU men's soccer head coach Clementin Oancea and graduate assistant men's soccer coach Michael Alberto.
-
Albuquerque would juke Laboriel to score his seventh goal of the year on a penalty kick, giving the Evangels an early 1-0 advantage.
-
Ted Okoroh would apply pressure on the Evangel defense with quick bursts of speed and gentle boot taps.
-
MACU forward, R. Albuquerque, attempted to scorch another goal into the SAGU net, but Jose Ladoriel was up to the task and bear-hugged the Evangel goal attempt.
-
Returning to the SAGU starting lineup, Ethan Stewart would fight to keep the ball away from MACU by launching a calculated offensive onslaught.
-
To get a different player than Albuquerque to add to the scoreboard for MACU, K. Williams would punch in a deflected header.
-
When clearing MACU shots from close to the Lion goal, Jacop Sang and Javaughn Hines would use their quick feet.
-
In the contest for SAGU, Jonathan Lopez, a sophomore midfielder for the Lions soccer team, demonstrated why he will be a valuable player in the future.
-
Late in the contest, Guilherme Calvacante leaped for the ball to intercept a MACU keep-away effort in the midfield, but the Lions ultimately fell short.
Oancea's Opinion
"It is always great to compete against the top 5 teams in the Nation, and it is a fantastic measuring stick to see where we are and what we need to work on. Congratulations to MACU & coach Danny, and his staff for a great game.
I'm so proud of our players' fighting spirit tonight; that was a step forward. We must continue working on getting fundamentally sound and building from our core foundation and principles," SAGU men's soccer head coach Clementin Oancea noted.
