SAGU tackles Langston in three sets

October 8, 2022

Langston, OK: The No. 9 Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) Lady Lions volleyball team road-tripped to Gayles Fieldhouse to face Langston University (LU). The Lady Lions faced LU in the first night of the Sooner Athletic Conference season at home, and after beating them before, they tried to utilize the same tactics to triumph once more.

The Lady Lions (20-0, 12-0) rolled LU in three sets, 25-14, 25–12, and 25-19

Lion Review

  • LU would score first in the first set due to a Lady Lions offensive blunder, but SAGU would establish their rhythm and not look back.

  • Emma Tompkins, a senior, and Riley Burcham would combine for a fantastic SAGU point on a superb Burcham assist.

  • The Lady Lions' Lilly Hanna and Karena Tipton excelled offensively and defensively at the net, making it difficult for LU to attempt kills and score blazing-fast points.

  • While leading the SAGU offensive, Alexandra Bonnett and Ava Myers received numerous Lady Lion assists, which they crushed for kills.

  • With her kill, Karena Tipton put an end to the opening set.

  • In the second set, the home LU crowd grumbled after witnessing this magnificent defeat as Abby Wells used her incredible athleticism to jump for a kill and smash it.

  • Emma Tompkins would make SAGU the clear winner in the set with a fantastic swing for a kill.

  • In the third set, Lindi Boling delivered a lob to Emma Tompkins for a kill.

  • Lilly Hanna and Karena Tipton would thwart a LU swing by using their length at the net to end the game.

More from Moore:

"This was a much better-played match than last night. Our kids played at a good level today. I thought the difference today was our speed and passing. Our back row kids played extremely well and gave us many good passes so we could run a fast offense. Our front-row defense was excellent as well. Emma Tompkins and Lilly locked up two very good middle hitters for Langston. Karena was big defensively on the right side. What she did not block she changed the hitter's shots where our defense was able to handle many balls off of the touches. 20-0 and 12-0 in the conference. This was a good day for SAGU Volleyball. ," SAGU Head Volleyball Coach Hank Moore said.
