Waxahachie, TX: On Saturday evening at the Sheaffer Center in Waxahachie, Texas, the Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) Lions men's basketball team played their second Sooner Athletic Conference (SAC) contest of the 2022–23 season against the No. 12 nationally ranked Wayland Baptist University (WBU) Pioneers.
After a tense contest, the Lions outlasted the Pioneers 88-83, spearheaded by Cortland Blake's double-double of 25 points and 13 rebounds and Brooks Haddock's 19 points.
Lion Review
-
Cortland Blake would play the first half of the game with commitment and fervor. The forward for SAGU was a threat on the offensive boards and the recipient of multiple punishing fast breaks.
-
The freshmen combo for the Lions team, Dallas Smith and JJ Boling, would provide an immediate spark off the bench. The points that the SAGU freshmen were able to provide furnished SAGU with the impetus they needed to counteract Wayland's scoring surge.
-
The 6 '10 center Philbert Weekes contributed significant minutes to the SAGU cause by skulking around the basket to score offensive rebound putbacks. Additionally, Weekes protected the rim against Wayland's basket drives.
-
SAGU trailed WBU 35-34 at the break, and Cortland Blake, who had nine points and eight rebounds, was one point and two rebounds shy of a double-double.
-
The crowd's favorite, Tyler Kinghorn, would exhibit confidence and leadership in the second half to aid SAGU in gaining momentum. Kinghorn invigorated his squad with his effort in blocking shots and his dime-dropping high-low passes to Blake.
-
In order to position himself for possibilities to release his pure jumper, Brooks Haddock utilized his hips and handles. In the second half, Haddock got hot, scoring 16 points and draining three three-pointers.
-
Cortland Blake would also add 16 second-half points to his well-thought-out and committed defense.
-
With four crucial free throws and a rebound that he snatched in traffic, Alerick Hall would ice the contest.
Deal's Declaration
"What a night. The fans were incredible, and we played great defense against a GREAT team! Bigtime performances from Cortland Blake and Brooks Haddock. Proud of our progress, and we continue to play with Joy!" SAGU head men's basketball coach Delton Deal said.
