Waxahachie, TX: For the Sooner Athletic Conference (SAC) Volleyball Tournament quarterfinals, the Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) Lady Lions matched up as the No. 1 seed to face the No. 8 seed University of Science and Arts (USAO) Drovers. SAGU captured the most previous SAC Tournament title with a 25-21, 25-19, 25-23 win over Wayland Baptist on Nov. 13, 2021, in Oklahoma City, clinching the host berth for this week's tournament. The Lady Lions have assured themselves a bid into the NAIA Championships Opening Round as the league regular-season champion. Another national-tournament bid will be up for grabs in the SAC Tournament.
The Lady Lions (30-0, 21-0) beat USAO in three fiery sets, 25-18, 26-24, and 25-7, to advance to the semifinal round of the Sooner Athletic Conference Volleyball Tournament.
Lion Review
-
The Lady Lion's scoring began with Alexandra Bonnett; star setter Riley Burcham would send a dime to Bonnett for the kill.
-
In the match's opening set, Riley Burcham's assists would become a recurring theme. The setter successfully found Emma Tompkins, Ava Myers, and Karena Tipton for kills. Wonderful ball sharing was taking place, and each Lady Lion posed a threat to the Drovers at the net.
-
SAGU defeated USAO in the opening set, and Riley finished the set with a game-high 14 assists.
-
The game's second set would prove to be the most exciting, as the home crowd's supporters were compelled to stand in support of the incredible and athletic hustling plays both sides were putting on.
-
Both teams had to rely on the ability of their defensive specialists in order for either team to have the upper hand.
-
The top dig leaders for the USAO Drovers were out dug by Tessa Glick (16), Maddi Petten (13), and Lindi Boling (10). SAGU began to pull away throughout the tight second set thanks to the gutsy diving saves.
-
SAGU won the second set by a score of two courtesy of back-to-back blocks by Emma Tompkins.
-
The Lady Lions were able to jump out to a significant lead in the third set after Abby Wells picked up all of her kills as they had fully neutralized the Drovers.
-
In the third and final set, Ashlyn Hill would deliver the decisive stroke for a 25-7 resounding victory.
More from Moore:
"Tonight was a good win for SAGU. I'm so proud of how we came back in set two. USAO has had a great season, and I'm so proud of them. Tonight our defensive specialist played very strong. Winning in the first round and advancing to the semifinals sets up a good weekend for the SAC. On Friday, we will play a very good MACU team in the semifinals at 4:00 pm." SAGU Head Volleyball Coach Hank Moore said.
