Lions clip Golden Eagles' wings in overtime contest

December 10, 2022

Siloam Spring, AR: On Saturday afternoon at the Bill George Arena, the Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) Lions men's basketball team played in a Sooner Athletic Conference (SAC) contest against the John Brown University (JBU) Golden Eagles.

SAGU defeated the John Brown University men's basketball team 76-70 in overtime despite the Golden Eagles coming back from 12 down to establish a four-point lead with 26 seconds left in regulation.

Lion Review

  • After the first half of play, SAGU took a commanding 35-23 lead over the Golden Eagles by dominating the painted area.

  • By frequently passing the ball to 6 '10 center Philbert Weekes and allowing him to dance and skate off of opponents in the paint, SAGU shot a solid 50% from the field.

  • Following the break, John Brown scored eight points from freshman Lukas Gabani to get the score within three, 39-36, by scoring 13 of the first 17 points of the second half.

  • Noah Boling was a calm commander as the SAGU team traded punches with the JBU squad, making a season-high ten free throws

  • With JBU defenders surrounding him and 26 seconds left in regulation, Brooks Haddock made two crucial three-pointers. Haddock had to double clutch and fade to cash in the late-game buckets.

  • SAGU won the game by scoring the game's first seven points in overtime.

  • Noah Boling was the Lions' highest-scoring player with 17 points. Cortland Blake and Brooks Haddock combined to add 29 points.

  • Philbert Weekes scored 12 points and had a season-high three blocks.

Deal's Declaration
"I'm proud of the players tonight; they fought against a tenacious JBU team and managed to prevail. We learned a lot on our road trip, and I can't wait to share it with our incredible fans when we return home next week." SAGU head men's basketball coach Delton Deal said.
