Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Darian Davis

In the second SAC match, UNTD defeats SAGU

December 16, 2022

Dallas, TX: On Friday afternoon at the Trinity Basin Athletic Complex in Dallas, Texas, the Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) Lions men's basketball team played the University of North Texas - Dallas (UNTD) Jaguars in a Sooner Athletic Conference (SAC) matchup.

UNTD protected their home court in their last game of 2022 to defeat SAGU 63-60.

Lion Review

  • In the first half of the game, Tyler Kinghorn and Cortland Blake combined to score 20 points without missing a shot for the Lions, who were dominant when penetrating in the paint.

  • The night started well for Philbert Weekes as well, who made two of his first three tries. After the substitutions, Weekes added a putback off a rebound and a post hook to maintain the Lions' superiority in the front court.

  • The Lions were up 28-25 on UNTD and out-assisted the Jaguars 9-3 at halftime.

  • Both sides played aggressively on defense in the second half of the game, which kept the score incredibly low.

  • The second half saw just two SAGU three-pointers, which is extremely low for SAGU. Noah Boling and Brooks Haddock each made one of those three-pointers.

  • With 13 points, Tyler Kinghorn led all SAGU players. Cortland Blake scored 11 points, ranking second among Lions scorers.

  • The SAGU team's top two rebounders were the Boling brothers, Noah and JJ, who each pulled down three offensive rebounds.

Deal's Declaration

"Although I appreciated the players' efforts, we need to sharpen our shooting if we want to play to our best potential. In 2023, we look forward to playing more basketball since we are becoming better every day. We'll take this time to recharge." SAGU head men's basketball coach Delton Deal said.
