Late-game heroics force OT in an epic battle of 287

December 3, 2022

Waxahachie, TX: On Saturday afternoon at the Sheaffer Center in Waxahachie, Texas, the Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) Lions men's basketball team played in a Sooner Athletic Conference (SAC) contest against their cross-town rivals Texas Wesleyan University (TWU)

The Rams were able to defeat the Lions in the battle of 287, 86-84.

Lion Review

  • Cortland Blake led all scorers in the first half of the game between the Lions and Rams, which was as competitive as an advertisement.

  • Noah Boling, the team's captain, connected on two of his three-point efforts, making half the Lions' four first-half attempts.

  • The first half saw 12 rebounds from Philbert Weekes and Cortland Blake combined, as the Lions trailed the Rams 38-28 at the intermission.

  • The Lions received the boost they required to cut the Ram lead in half thanks to flawless free throw shooting and a large number of assists.

  • Noah Boling's fadeaway three-pointer with a second left in regulation forced overtime. Boling's s bravery in the game and gusto shot-making kept the SAGU's chances of winning the Battle of 287 alive.

  • The Texas Wesleyan squad reached the free throw line 13 times during overtime; the disparity in foul throws proved to be the game's deciding factor.

  • Cortland Blake finished with a season-high 28 points and eight rebounds.

  • Noah Boling added 16 points and five assists.

  • With 16 points and 15 rebounds, Philbert Weekes set new season highs and achieved his third double-double of the year. Weekes even made his first season-opening three-point attempt.

Deal's Declaration

"What a great game. We showed a lot of fight on a tough shooting night for us, but we will learn and bounce back even better from this as we grow," SAGU head men's basketball coach Delton Deal said.
