Lady Lions learn a valuable lesson on the road

September 20, 2022

Waxahachie, TX: A non-conference game between Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) Lady Lions and the McMurry University (MCM) War Hawks took place on the Wilford Moore Stadium FieldTurf. Grace Singleton, a sophomore defender for the Warhawks, was selected for the ASC Player to Watch list. The Lions' offensive assault had a massive challenge since Singleton, the true freshman, played significant minutes in nine shutouts, starting nine of the final ten games during McMurry's 2021 season.

Lions Review

  • In the first half of the game, the Lady Lions' superior defensive rotations drove the War Hawks into offside errors.

  • War Hawk goalie G. Singleton would live up to her ASC distinction when Shakira Williams shed a McMurry defender to allow an opening for a chance on goal.

  • Valeria Olivas Maldonado would drop corner kicks from the sky to provide Alexis Roman the chance to punt a goal into the goal.

  • Jordan Shelton would fill in and quickly establish her presence with her superb footwork and passing.

  • The War Hawks led 1-0 at the break, thanks to a goal from K. Moore.

  • Sampa Chisanga's aggressive play in the second quarter of play forced a McMurry team effort to prevent a shot.

  • M. Standifer's multi-goal effort helped the War Hawks win 3-0 in the end.

Paul's Pondering

"We played a very fit, physical, and disciplined opponent, which was an eye-opening "Welcome to Collegiate Soccer" orientation for our newcomers. We discussed our objective for the second half, and I'm proud of the team's turn-around performance with our intentional desire to win 50/50 balls. The final result was based on which team capitalized on the other team's errors," SAGU women's soccer head coach Paul Hason commented.
