Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Darian Davis

Free throw woes stump the Lions

January 12, 2023

Waxahachie, TX: On Thursday afternoon at the Sheaffer Center in Waxahachie, Texas the Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) Lions men's basketball team played a Sooner Athletic Conference (SAC) contest against the No. 3 Langston University (LU) Lions.

After a valiant effort, SAGU fell to the undefeated Langston squad 70-60 in the lion versus lion jungle fight.

Lion Review

  • Early in the first half of the game, the SAGU Lions squad jumped out to a spirited start, empowered by their rowdy home crowd.

  • LU was able to chip away at the SAGU lead due to SAGU's uncharacteristically poor free-throw shooting. Going into the halftime break, SAGU had missed 10 of their 19 attempts from the charity stripe.

  • Philbert Weekes was a magnificent anchor for the SAGU defense in the first half. With Phil as the last line of defense for the SAGU defense, the big man came through, blocking five shots before halftime.

  • At halftime, the Hometown Lions led by a single point with a score of 32 to 31. Leading scorers at halftime were Cortland Blake with 11 points and Brooks Haddock with 7.

  • In the second half, both squads were victims of nagging foul troubles. In a comparison of free-throw shooting, Langston shot 87.5% on their 24 attempts, while SAGU shot 57.5% on their 40 attempts.

  • In the closing moments of a very chippy battle, Langston's poise at the free throw line and bench production was the difference maker.

  • Top performers for SAGU were Cortland Blake, who scored 20 points on 70% shooting from the field, and Brooks Haddock, who scored 13 points.

  • Philbert Weekes set a new career high in block shots, and his five blocks were the most by any SAGU player this season.
