SAGU Lions tamed the Tigers 94-52 behind Weekes’ 20 rebound double-double

January 14, 2023

Waxahachie, TX: On Saturday afternoon at the Sheaffer Center in Waxahachie, Texas, the Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) Lions men's basketball team played a Sooner Athletic Conference (SAC) contest against the Central Christian College (CCC) Tigers.

Despite the Tigers' best attempts, SAGU defeated them by 94-52.

Lion Review

  • The entire squad of Central Christian was on pace to be outscored by Cortland Blake and Brooks Haddock in the game's first half.

  • The Tigers failed to create baskets against the SAGU Lions' 94 feet of smothering, high-pressure defense.

  • Alerick Hall was very forceful on defense and set the tone for the Lions' defensive strategy.

  • Three Lions had surpassed the double-digit mark by halftime. All scorers were topped by Cortland Blake, who had 13 points. Noah Boiling contributed 10 points, while Brooks Haddocks added 12.

  • Central Christian only made 27% of their shots on their 26 tries at the half.

  • The SAGU Lions squad kept piling defensive stops in the second half. Philbert Weekes kept grabbing rebound after rebound as the Lions continued to exert intense pressure.

  • Before Weekes checked out of the rout, the double-double machine had racked up a season-high 20 rebounds in addition to his 12 points.

  • Dallas Smith scored the most points off the bench, 11 in total, all in the second half.

  • Haddock and Blake each scored 20 points.

  • The Lions' scoring tsunami also included contributions from Tyson Pine and Jacory Dawkins.

Deal's Declaration

"What a fun night for the team and fans! Great team game with five guys in double figures and Phil with 20 rebounds! The joy is coming out now, and that's when we are at our best. I'm proud of these guys and am lucky to coach them." SAGU head men's basketball coach Delton Deal said.
