Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Darian Davis

Against the Lions, the Pioneers start off strong

January 19, 2023

Plainview, TX: On Thursday afternoon at the Hutcherson Center in Plainview, Texas, the Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) Lions men's basketball team played a Sooner Athletic Conference (SAC) contest against the RV Wayland Baptist University (WBU) Pioneers.

Lion Review

  • The WBU Pioneers started off the game well from long range in the first half. In the first half of the game, Wayland made six out of 10 three-point tries, or 60%. Prior to the first-half break, Cortland Blake was the first and only SAGU Lion to successfully make a field goal from beyond the arc.

  • At the midway mark, Philbert Weekes was another major contributor for the Lions, coming close to a double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds before the break.

  • The Lions were behind 46-18 as a result of their subpar shooting. WBU outrebounded the Lions 25-17 and out assisted them 9-5.

  • Although the Lions performed significantly better in the second half, they still fell short 81-64. After falling down by 34, SAGU eventually regained its composure after the break and halved its deficit for the game's last 17 points. The Lions outscored the Pioneers 46-36 in the second half, in large part because Wayland missed all six of its three-point attempts in the second half while the Lions connected on 9 of 16 (36%).

  • Philbert Weekes, who ended with a double-double of 12 points and 15 rebounds, and Alerick Hall, who scored 10 points, were the standout players for the Lions. Dallas Smith topped all SAGU bench scorers for the second game in a row with 8 points.

  • An encouraging moment in a bad night for the Lions was the contribution of Xi'an Todman from the SAGU bench, which outscored Wayland's bench 26-10.
