Waxahachie, TX: On Monday evening at the Sheaffer Center in Waxahachie, Texas, the Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) Lady Lions women's basketball team played their first contest of the 2023 year against the Northern New Mexico College (NNMC) Lady Eagles.
After a fierce battle, the Lady Lions' clawed the Lady Eagles defeating NNMC 82-61 to win the first SAGU sporting event of the new year.

Rylee Lavender led the Lady Lions squad scoring a game-high 20 points. Lavender made four three-point shot attempts and was a perfect 6/6 from the free-throw line.

Taylor Moravick scored 11 points and grabbed 16 rebounds to record her fourth double-double of the season.

The SAGU bench produced 35 more points than the NNMC bench.

Key contributors off the bench for the Lady Lions were Chanie Chambers, Kyla McMinn, and Mary Jo Parker. The trio combined for 22 of the Lady Lions' 35 points.

"I am pleased with the way the women started the new year. They shared the ball well on offense and confidently made shots while playing gritty and energetic defense. After the break, this game was a terrific opportunity for our squad to regroup and be ready to play our best in the second half of conference play." SAGU head women's basketball coach Micheal Sons said.

On Thursday, January 5, Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) will travel to take on Southwestern Christian University (SCU) for a Sooner Athletic Conference (SAC) matchup.
