SAGU Lions Remain Resilient Despite Tough SAC Showdown Against TXWES Rams

Waxahachie, TX - In an action-packed Sooner Athletic Conference (SAC) matchup on October 14, 2023, the Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) Lions football team faced off against their crosstown rivals, the Texas Wesleyan University (TXWES) Rams at Lumpkins Stadium in Waxahachie, Texas. Unfortunately for the Lions, it was a challenging day on the gridiron, with the Rams emerging victorious with a commanding score of 51-0.
 

First Quarter
The Lions had a slow start on offense, but their pass defense shone brightly in the first quarter. Isaac Gowdy made a spectacular red-zone interception, diving into the corner of the end zone for a standout play. However, the TXWES team demonstrated strength on all fronts. Their special teams unit blocked a SAGU punt, leading to their first points, and the Rams' offense capitalized on the excellent field position provided by their defense. By the end of the first quarter, the Rams had already built a significant lead, with a score of 28-0.
 

Halftime
At halftime, the Rams continued to hold a commanding lead, with a score of 41-0. The Lions' defense was led by Keith Hargraves, Joseph Chavez, and Lonterrious McClain, each recording four tackles by halftime.
 

Second Half
In the second half, the Lions struggled to gain significant yardage while the Rams continued to add to their lead. The Rams ultimately secured a decisive victory with a final score of 51-0.

Player Highlights

  • Briley Green, the Lions' quarterback, completed 10 passes for 93 yards.
  • Paul Odidi led the Lions in both receptions and receiving yards, with six catches for 53 yards.
  • Jamal Long had three catches for 48 yards, including a remarkable 25-yard reception over several defenders.
  • On the defensive side, Joseph Chavez, Xavier Garcia, Noah Gipson, and Lonterrious McClain combined for six tackles each.
  • Ryan Lewis showcased his kicking proficiency with a punt that went for an impressive 61 yards.
