SAGU Lions Dominate Second Half to Secure 37-16 Victory Over WBU

October 7, 2023

Plainview, TX -  In an exhilarating Sooner Athletic Conference (SAC) matchup, the Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) Lions Football team clashed with the Wayland Baptist University (WBU) Pioneers in a game filled with thrilling moments and outstanding performances.

First Half Highlights
In the first half, SAGU quarterback Briley Green showcased his arm strength, completing three throws, including a remarkable 54-yard pass to the towering 6'5" wide receiver, Jamal Long. Long's incredible run route and precise catch reeled in the perfect spiral, resulting in the lengthy reception.

Despite the Lions' exciting aerial display, turnovers haunted them in the first half. These turnovers allowed the Wayland squad to gain excellent field position, leading to two field goals and an interception reception.

On the defensive side, Quaveann Mitchell, Joseph Chavez, and Keith Hargraves stood out, demonstrating an innate ability to read the game and thwart the Wayland rushing attack.

Lonterrious McClain made a heroic interception diving to intercept a Wayland pass, sparking a childlike celebration from the entire SAGU team. This marked McClain's first interception of the 2023 season, hinting at more remarkable plays to come.

At halftime, SAGU trailed Wayland 13-0, setting the stage for a second-half comeback.

Second Half Highlights
The second half witnessed a bursting of the floodgates for the SAGU offense, and a defensive surge started with a blocked Wayland punt by Noah Gipson, pinning Wayland deep in their own territory.

SAGU quarterback Jamonte Gordon-West was on point in the third quarter, completing 50% of his throws for a total of 62 yards.

SAGU running back Dakeevion Rose became the focal point of the offense, breaking through tackles to score three touchdowns in the second half. Dylan Alford added an explosive aspect to the Lions' offensive approach, averaging 12.5 yards on two carries.

The most breathtaking play of the second half came from Dylan Alford on special teams, as he returned a Wayland kickoff for an incredible 80-yard score, seemingly skating his way into the end zone.

SAGU ultimately secured a convincing 37-16 victory, moving their season record to 2-3.
