SAGU Lady Lions Fall to MACU in SAC Tournament Opener

November 4, 2023

Oklahoma City, OK - The Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) Lady Lions soccer team embarked on their SAC Tournament journey, determined to prove their mettle as the No. 5 seed against the formidable No. 4 seed, Mid-America Christian University (MACU) Evangels at the Dill Soccer Field in Oklahoma City. Despite their passionate performance, the Lady Lions' postseason journey came to an end in a hard-fought battle.

Lions Review
The Lady Lions set the tone for the game with their palpable excitement and intensity. Their fearless approach to the contest made it clear that they had no intentions of holding back. The early moments of the game were a showcase of their fiery spirit and determination.

Freshman sensation Anna Bewley wasted no time in launching a relentless assault on the MACU goalkeeper. Her postseason debut displayed none of the nerves that might be expected from a first-timer. Bewley's incredible goal-scoring abilities, which had made her one of the league's top scorers during the regular season, were on full display.

Despite their valiant efforts, the Lady Lions found themselves trailing 1-0 at halftime. However, their exceptional ball movement and unselfish play had created opportunities, and they were determined to turn the tide in their favor during the second half.

Another freshman making her postseason debut, Stephanie Hernandez, showed her remarkable playmaking skills and intelligent decision-making. She was a catalyst for the Lady Lions throughout the regular season, and her impact traveled with her to the postseason.

In the second half, the Lady Lions managed to break through, with Anna Bewley delivering a goal into the back of the net, courtesy of an assist from Stephanie Hernandez. Her crucial assist helped Anna Bewley find the back of the net, briefly leveling the score, and the dynamic duo, both making their postseason debut, showcased their resilience and talent.

Yet, their joy from the equalizer was short-lived, as the MACU team responded swiftly to regain the lead. In the end, the Lady Lions fought valiantly but fell short, with a final score of 2-1 in favor of MACU.

While the Lady Lions' postseason journey may have concluded earlier than they had hoped, their tenacity and fighting spirit were evident throughout the contest. Their performances this season, particularly by standout freshmen Anna Bewley and Stephanie Hernandez, serve as a promising sign for the future of the program.

The SAGU Lady Lions may have faced a challenging ending to their postseason journey, but their potential continues to shine brightly, providing hope for future success in the Sooner Athletic Conference.
