In a road triumph, Weekes rules Central Christian

February 16, 2023

McPherson, KS: On Thursday evening in McPherson, Kansas, the Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) Lions men's basketball team played a Sooner Athletic Conference (SAC) contest against the Central Christian College (CCC) Tigers.

The Lady Lions clawed the Tigers 94-86.

Lion Review

  • There were no lead changes for the Lions during the contest. SAGU seized the early lead and never looked back with accurate shooting and tough interior defense.

  • The Lions had similar success in taking advantage of Central Christian's mistakes. SAGU scored 27 points as a result of the Tigers' 17 turnovers.

  • The Lion's bench outscored Central Christian's bench 31 to 13 in the game.

  • Philbert Weekes of the SAGU Lions was a strong performer. Philbert Weekes dominated every half with his outstanding all-around effort. Weekes ended the contest with 20 points and nine rebounds. Weekes also produced two assists, one steal, and one block. Weekes was only one rebound from recording his season's eighth double-double.

  • Brooks Haddock added 18 points and three assists. Tyler Kinghorn scored 15 points on 66% shooting while being unstoppable in the paint.

  • Cortland Blake scored 14 points and grabbed seven rebounds with his three steals.

  • The Lions were one steal short of their season-high (13).

Deal's Declaration

"Proud of how the guys handled business on the road. Great performance from Philbert Weekes, but this was a triumph for the entire team. Excellent shooting night from CCC, but we prevailed because of our mentality," SAGU head men's basketball coach Delton Deal said.
