Jason Covarrubias resigns as Head Cross Country/Track and Field coach at SAGU

May, 10 2022

Esteemed coach Jason Covarrubias resigned as Head Cross Country/Track and Field coach at Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU). Jason Covarrubias saw numerous successes during his tenure as the Head Cross Country/Track and Field coach at SAGU. He pushed the SAGU Cross Country/Track and Field athletes to be their best selves, and his "why not us?" attitude created a culture that drove the program to greater heights.

Jason Covarrubias was able to instruct the development and mentor the growth of four NCCAA National Champions, one NAIA National Champion, 41 All-Americans, ten Sooner Athletic Conference (SAC) All-Conference Cross Country runners, two NCCAA National Scholar Teams, a top 15 Nationally ranked Men's Outdoor Track Team, a men's team that ranked as high as No. 2 in the South Central Region, a women's team that ranked as high as No. 10 in the South Central Region and played a vital role in the creation of the new multi-million dollar track facility on the SAGU campus (Lions Athletic Complex).

In addition to his role as overseer of the SAGU Cross Country/Track and Field program, Jason Covarrubias spent seven years as a member of the NCCAA National Cross Country Chair, five years as a SAC Cross Country rater and was named a South Central Region Coach of The Year Finalist three times.

"The energy and passion that Jason has poured into the cross-country and track and field programs is inestimable. He has spent ten years in faithful service to student-athletes and SAGU while starting cross country, indoor track and field, and outdoor track and field. Starting each of those programs from scratch, he has built each of them into respected programs at the conference, NCCAA, and NAIA level," remarked SAGU Director of Athletics, Dr. Jesse Godding.

"Jason's impact on these programs will long be remembered at SAGU by student-athletes, his coaching peers, and the administration. He has been devoted to the task at hand, and I offer my personal thanks and gratitude for his efforts to SAGU and wish him the best in his new endeavors," SAGU Director of Athletics Dr. Jesse Godding went on to say.
