Bethany, OK - In a highly-anticipated showdown, the Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) Lions soccer team went head-to-head with the Southwestern Christian University (SCU) Eagles in their inaugural Sooner Athletic Conference (SAC) encounter of the 2023 season Tuesday afternoon. In a hard-fought road match characterized by grit and determination, the Lions showcased their skills but were narrowly edged out by the Eagles with a final score of 2-1.
Lions Review
The Lions wasted no time in making their presence felt on the field. In the first half, John Garcia netted a brilliant goal, courtesy of an assist from Isaiah Waddy. These two players put on a soccer clinic, causing frustration for the Eagles' defense. SCU found themselves trailing 1-0 going into the halftime break, thanks to Garcia's clinical finish.
Despite SCU's early deficit, the Eagles had several opportunities to level the score but struggled to capitalize on their chances. The Lions' defense held firm, with goalkeeper David Calvete Beltran delivering a phenomenal performance, making a total of eight crucial saves to keep his team in contention.
However, the second half saw SCU manage to slip two goals past the resilient SAGU defense, ultimately securing the win. While the Lions fought valiantly, they fell just short of clinching victory in thier SAC opener.
