Fort Worth, TX – On Saturday evening, the stage was set for an epic showdown as the Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) Lady Lions soccer team clashed with their cross-town rivals, the Texas Wesleyan University (TWU) Rams, in a Sooner Athletic Conference (SAC) encounter. Fans were treated to a soccer spectacle that lived up to all the pre-game hype, and in the end, it was the Lady Lions who emerged victorious, defeating the Rams with a hard-fought scoreline of 2-1. This triumph marked a significant milestone for SAGU, securing their second consecutive conference win in the 2023 season.
Lions Review
The early moments of the game witnessed all of the scoring action from both teams, with the Lady Lions taking the initiative. In the fourth minute, Stephanie Hernandez unleashed a moment of pure brilliance, executing a gorgeous spin move before slotting the ball into the net. The goal was a testament to the skill and teamwork of the Lady Lions, with Valeria Olivas Maldonado providing the crucial assist.
Not content with just one, Valeria Olivas Maldonado continued to make her mark on the match, scoring an unassisted goal just two minutes later. The back-to-back scores ignited a fire within the Lady Lions, and their increased energy and determination were also shown on the defensive side of the ball.
Throughout the game, SAGU's goalkeeper, Zoe Boldt, proved to be a reliable presence between the posts, collecting an impressive seven saves to deny the Rams' attempts to level the score. Additionally, defenders Brooklyn Piper and Paula Moreno Gomez displayed unwavering commitment, contributing to the team's defensive solidity during their full 90 minutes on the field.
The Lady Lions now look forward to their next challenge On October 3rd, Tuesday at 5:00 PM, they will hit the road to face Oklahoma Panhandle State University in Goodwell, OK.
