Waxahachie, TX – The Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) Lady Lions volleyball team brought the heat on Saturday afternoon when they faced off against the Oklahoma Panhandle State University (OPSU) Aggies in a Sooner Athletic Conference (SAC) showdown. The stage was set just a day after the team's heartwarming ring ceremony honoring the 2022 Lady Lions, and it's safe to say that the celebratory vibes carried right onto the court. The Lady Lions roared with energy, defeating OPSU in a thrilling four-set match with scores of 25-14, 25-22, 25-19, and 25-23.
Lions Review
In the opening set, the Lady Lions showed sheer dominance as they cruised to a convincing 25-14 victory. The match's conclusion was marked by a spectacular display of teamwork as Emma Tompkins unleashed back-to-back kills, beautifully assisted by Riley Burcham, a play that has become a characteristic of the SAGU offensive strategy.
The second set witnessed a spirited OPSU Aggies team that showcased fluent and precise ball movement, bouncing back to secure a narrow 25-23 win. During this phase, the SAGU defense struggled to make successive saves.
However, the Lady Lions didn't let this setback deter them. With unwavering determination, they rallied and went on to dominate the next two sets, clinching the match in style.
The standout performers for the SAGU Lady Lions included Emma Tompkins, who led the team with a remarkable 20 kills, closely followed by Bailee Alexander with 17 kills, and Mackenzie Smith with 10. Riley Burcham's performance was nothing short of outstanding, as she delivered a game-high four serve aces and provided 28 assists to her teammates.
On the defensive front, Esther Holtzclaw was a force to be reckoned with, contributing three crucial blocks to lead the Lady Lions. Tessa Glick exhibited her prowess with 16 digs, ensuring that the OPSU attacks were met with strong resistance.
On October 6th, Friday at 6:00 PM, they will hit the road to face Langston University, as they continue their journey through the conference.
