Waxahachie, TX – In front of an energetic home crowd at the Sheaffer Center, the Nelson University Lady Lions delivered a commanding 3-1 victory over the University of Science and Arts in a Sooner Athletic Conference (SAC) duel on Friday night. The win not only kept the Lady Lions undefeated in conference play (12-0 SAC, 17-4 overall), but it also witnessed history being made as senior libero Tessa Glick became the Nelson University all-time leader in career digs.
Glick entered the contest needing just eight digs to surpass the program's career digs record. With her tenacious defense, she soared past that milestone, recording a game-high 30 digs. Her performance electrified the arena as teammates and fans celebrated her accomplishment. Glick's achievement, however, was just part of a stellar all-around effort from Nelson, who outmatched Science and Arts in nearly every statistical category.
Nelson took control early, overcoming a shaky start in the first set (23-25), but responded decisively to win the next three sets (25-14, 25-16, 25-14). The Lady Lions' offense was led by Lilly Hanna, who registered 15 kills on an impressive .560 hitting percentage, followed closely by Alexandra Bonnett with 11 kills and Caroline Boone adding 10. Setter Taylor Cavazos dished out a game-high 28 assists, orchestrating the team's offense with precision.
Defensively, Nelson dominated, amassing 75 digs compared to Science and Arts' 58, and had a total of six service aces—three of which came from Glick, showcasing her versatility on both ends of the court. The Lady Lions also controlled the net with 11 team blocks, led by Samantha Moore and Bailee Alexander.
Science and Arts' standout performance came from Jaliyah Cox, who led the Drovers with 16 kills, but it wasn't enough to stop Nelson's powerful attack and defensive toughness.
What's Next?
The Lady Lions will look to continue their winning streak as they face another SAC opponent, Mid-America Christian University (MACU), in a quick turnaround match on Saturday, October 12 at 1 PM in the Sheaffer Center. With Tessa Glick's record-breaking night behind them, the Lady Lions are riding a wave of momentum as they push towards a top finish in conference play.
