Lakeland, FLÂ - The Nelson University Lady Lions women's basketball team opened their 2024-25 season in thrilling fashion with a commanding 78-48 win over Webber International University on Monday evening. This inaugural game for Nelson University showcased a fresh, fierce team identity, setting a promising tone for the season.
Transfer standout Kate Miller led the charge for the Lady Lions, posting an impressive 21 points along with 13 rebounds, underscoring her impact on both ends of the court. Miller's relentless effort and athleticism kept the Webber Warriors on their heels, especially in the paint, where she was virtually unstoppable. Her performance highlighted a strong offensive showing, with the Lady Lions collectively shooting 38.4% from the field.
Supporting Miller's star turn, Neeley Tilley-Bedick contributed a solid 10 points, while Cailyn Tucker added eight. The Lady Lions bench was also a significant factor, pouring in 66 points, which fueled their victory and showcased the depth of this roster.
The Lady Lions dominated every facet of the game, from second-chance points (23) to points off turnovers (27). With a robust defensive strategy, they limited Webber International to just 19.05% shooting in the fourth quarter, closing out the game with authority.
Head Coach Michael Sons reflected on the game, saying, "I am proud of the ladies' effort and energy and how they represented us in our first game as Nelson University. It's nice to win the first one, but we know there's a lot to improve on. I'm incredibly proud of these young ladies for their hard work and focus."
