Plainview, TX – The Nelson University Lady Lions showcased their resilience on the road, earning a 3-1 victory against Wayland Baptist University on Saturday morning in their latest Sooner Athletic Conference (SAC) clash. The win advances the Lady Lions' record to 6-4-1 (2-1 SAC) as they continue to climb in the conference standings.
The match began with Nelson University applying early pressure, and it didn't take long for their efforts to pay off. In the 21st minute, Anna Bewley struck with precision, giving the Lady Lions a 1-0 lead. The goal marked her first of the season, energizing Nelson University as they took control of the first half.
Wayland Baptist, however, wasn't going down without a fight. Midway through the second half, the Pioneers found an equalizer through Ashley Perez, assisted by Narrian Gomez at the 65-minute mark. The momentum briefly swung back in Wayland Baptist's favor, but the Lady Lions stayed composed and quickly reasserted their dominance.
In the 77th minute, Stephanie Hernandez, aided by Daisy Altamirano, broke the deadlock, putting Nelson back on top with a well-placed shot. Moments later, in the 81st minute, Altamirano sealed the win with a goal of her own, assisted by Bewley, extending the lead to 3-1.
The Lady Lions' defense, anchored by Alejandra Ruiz and Tanner Sorenson, held firm to secure the victory. Sorenson made key saves to prevent any late heroics from Wayland Baptist, finishing the match with 3 saves and ensuring Nelson left Plainview with all three points.
With a total of 16 shots compared to Wayland's 6, Nelson University controlled much of the match and capitalized on their opportunities when it mattered most. Their offensive persistence and defensive organization led them to a deserved victory.
