Lady Lions Fall Short Against Texas Wesleyan in Battle of Rivals

November 26, 2024

Fort Worth, TX - The Nelson University Lady Lions faced a challenging Sooner Athletic Conference (SAC) road test on Tuesday evening against the Texas Wesleyan Rams at the Sid Richardson Center. Despite a determined effort, the Lady Lions fell 74-57 to their SAC rivals.

The contest opened with Texas Wesleyan taking control early, outscoring the Lady Lions 19-9 in the first quarter. Struggles from the field (4-of-20 shooting in the opening frame) left Nelson battling uphill from the start. However, the Lady Lions showed their resilience in the second quarter, improving their shooting to 33.3% and finding success behind the arc. Wendy Clemmons, who finished with a team-high 18 points, sparked the offense with timely three-point shooting.

The Rams, however, proved formidable in maintaining their lead, utilizing a balanced offensive attack led by Savanna Smith, who scored 16 points, and Imani Mitchell, who added 11 points and 6 rebounds. Texas Wesleyan's efficiency from beyond the arc (8-of-16, 50%) and dominance on the boards (38 total rebounds) kept the Lady Lions at bay.

Nelson's Paris Miller provided a notable spark with 13 points and 6 rebounds, while Kyla McMinn contributed 5 points and 3 rebounds. The Lady Lions showed signs of life in the third quarter, shooting 43.8% from the field and matching the Rams' scoring output. However, their efforts were not enough to close the gap, as the Rams capitalized on key turnovers and second-chance opportunities.

Despite the loss, the Lady Lions showcased their competitive spirit, particularly in the fourth quarter, with strong defensive plays and an improved shooting percentage of 35.7%.
