Waxahachie, TX – Thursday evening, the Nelson University Lady Lions hosted the University of Houston-Victoria Jaguars at the Lions Athletic Complex in Waxahachie, Texas, for the first home contest of the 2024 season. In a tightly contested match that showcased grit on both sides, the Lady Lions fell just short, succumbing to a 1-0 defeat.
Scoring Summary and Key Plays
1st Half
The match began with both teams feeling each other out, but it wasn't long before Nelson University's Daisy Altamirano and Anna Bewley began applying pressure on the Jaguars' defense. Altamirano's agility and Bewley's relentless pursuit highlighted the Lady Lions' strategy to dominate possession early on. Despite their best efforts, the Jaguars' backline proved resilient, denying the Lady Lions any clear opportunities.
As the half progressed, Nelson University's goalkeeper, Samantha Longoria, became a critical figure, pulling off two consecutive, spectacular saves to keep the game level. However, the Jaguars' persistent attacks eventually paid off in the 36th minute when Arantza Alva, assisted by Yesenia Vega, found the back of the net. The goal, coming from a well-executed play, broke the deadlock and put the visitors up 1-0.
