September 9, 2024

Sherman, TX – On a clear Monday evening, the Nelson University Lions men's soccer team faced off against Austin College in a high-energy match that ended in a 2-2 draw at Pierce Complex. With a determined attitude and a fast-paced rhythm, both teams put on a spectacle that had the 171 fans in attendance on the edge of their seats.

The game began with Austin College striking first, as Jose Nandin found the back of the net at the 24:30 mark, assisted by Jonah Ferrante, giving the 'Roos a 1-0 lead. The Lions, however, responded quickly. Just four minutes later, Teddy Nkamanzi leveled the score with a clinical finish, assisted by Ethan Stewart. The Lions continued to press, their hunger for victory clear as the first half ended with the score tied 1-1.

The second half saw Nelson University push forward with more intensity, and it paid off in the 62nd minute. Figueiredo Mattoso, with a deft assist from Ethan Stewart, powered in a goal to give the Lions a 2-1 lead. Nelson University dominated possession, registering 26 shots overall, 8 of them on goal, compared to Austin College's 15 total shots.

However, Austin College was not done yet. With time winding down, Pierce Wear capitalized on a defensive lapse, scoring the equalizer in the 81st minute with an unassisted goal. Despite several close chances in the final minutes, the Lions were unable to regain the lead, and the match concluded in a 2-2 draw.

Ethan Stewart was a standout for the Lions, contributing two assists and leading the team with 8 shots, 4 of which were on target. Mattoso and Nkamanzi both found the net, while Nelson University's defense, led by goalkeeper Leonel Cuellar, made 4 saves to keep the team in contention.

The Lions finished with 3 corner kicks, compared to Austin College's 2, and kept their fouls to a minimum with just 8 across the match.
