Nelson Lady Lions Sweep Wayland Baptist in Commanding Fashion

September 20, 2024

Plainview, TX – The Nelson University Lady Lions extended their winning streak in the Sooner Athletic Conference (SAC) with a dominant performance over Wayland Baptist University, claiming a 3-0 sweep (25-15, 28-26, 25-17) on Friday night. The victory marks the Lady Lions' fifth consecutive SAC win, improving their overall record to 9-4 and an impressive 5-0 in conference play.

Lady Lions Review
From the first serve, the Lady Lions showcased why they are one of the top teams in the SAC. In the opening set, Nelson University stormed out to a commanding lead, hitting at an efficient .324 percentage, while Wayland Baptist struggled to find their footing, only managing a .036 percentage. Caroline Boone led the attack with a stellar 12 kills on the night, helping the Lady Lions establish dominance early.

The second set proved to be a closer affair, with Wayland Baptist making adjustments to push Nelson to the limit. But with their backs against the wall, Nelson's players delivered under pressure, edging out a thrilling 28-26 victory to go up two sets. Setter Taylor Cavazos was the catalyst in this set, dishing out 16 assists and keeping the Lady Lions offense fluid and dangerous.

In the third set, Nelson University never looked back, securing the match with a 25-17 win, driven by their solid block and relentless defense. Lilly Hanna was a standout defensively, recording 10 kills and three critical blocks, while libero Tessa Glick kept the floor covered with a game-high 14 digs.

Notable Performances

Wayland Baptist's defense couldn't hold up against Nelson's relentless attack, with the Lady Lions hitting at a .241 clip for the match, while holding Wayland to a .130 percentage. Fade Ogunbade and Carlee Heidebrecht led Wayland with 8 and 5 kills, respectively, but it wasn't enough to slow the surging Lady Lions.
