Mollel Strikes Early, but Lady Lions Edged Late in 2–1 Road Loss to Texas Wesleyan

October 21, 2025

Fort Worth, TX – The Nelson University Lady Lions fought hard on the road but came up just short in a 2–1 loss to Texas Wesleyan University on Tuesday evening at Martin Field. The Sooner Athletic Conference matchup saw both teams exchange momentum in a gritty contest defined by relentless pressure and late drama.

Nelson controlled the early pace, pushing the Rams deep into their defensive half with crisp passing and consistent shot creation. The breakthrough came in the 37th minute when Ruth Mollel found the back of the net, finishing cleanly off an assist from Samantha Delgado. The Lady Lions outshot Texas Wesleyan 11–3 in the opening frame, keeping goalkeeper Hannah Smith under constant fire with 7 first-half saves.

After the break, the Rams found new life. In the 52nd minute, Kayannah Moore equalized with a powerful strike to even the score at 1–1. Nelson continued to apply pressure, with key attempts from Stephanie Hernandez, Daisy Altamirano, and Anna Stovall, but Smith's stellar goalkeeping kept the Lions at bay.

The deciding moment came in the 85th minute when Texas Wesleyan's Natalie Ipina converted a late opportunity off an assist from Katheryn Cameron, giving the Rams a 2–1 lead they would hold until the final whistle. Nelson's final surge fell short despite a game-high 18 total shots (13 on goal) and a commanding offensive performance.

With the loss, the Lady Lions fall to 7–7-2 (2–6 SAC), while the Rams improve to 4–9-2 (2–6 SAC).
