Javaughn Hines of Nelson University Named 2025 Division I Men’s Soccer Kyle Rote Jr. Award Recipient

Greenville, SC — The NCCAA announced senior defender Javaughn Hines of Nelson University as the 2025 Division I Men's Soccer Kyle Rote Jr. Award winner, recognizing one of the nation's most complete student-athletes—on the field, in the classroom, and in his commitment to service.

For four years, Hines has been the definition of reliability. The Hanover, Jamaica native anchored the Lions' backline from the moment he stepped on campus, starting every match of his career and logging over 6,000 minutes—playing the full 90 in all but four contests. His consistency, communication, and composure transformed the Lions' defensive identity, while his senior-season contributions (two assists and a goal from the back) added punch to Nelson's attack.

But Hines' impact extends far beyond soccer. Rooted firmly in faith, he serves with humility and a genuine heart for people. Each week he volunteers in the kid's ministry at The Oaks Church, leading activities, assisting with lessons, and creating a welcoming environment for children to learn about God's love. He also dedicates time to community soccer camps, using the sport to engage local youth, teach teamwork, and share Christian values.

Even in his "free time," Hines continues to serve—supporting Paws for Reflection Outreach by repairing and improving the facility for animals and visitors. His commitment to people, purpose, and positive influence is unwavering.

In the classroom, Hines is just as exceptional. The Accounting major carries a 3.91 GPA and has earned a long list of academic accolades: Dean's List, President's List, NAIA SAC All-Academic Team, and multiple NCCAA scholar-athlete honors. On the pitch, he is a two-time Nelson University Defensive Player of the Year and a 2023 NCCAA All-Tournament Team selection.

Nelson Head Men's Soccer Coach Cesar Espana praised Hines' rare blend of humility and leadership.

"Javaughn is a natural leader whose actions speak louder than words," Espana said. "He leads by example—encouraging teammates, staying positive under pressure, and setting the tone through relentless effort. Off the field, he invests in others with the same dedication. He's an exceptional athlete, but an even better person."

The Kyle Rote Jr. Award stands among the NCCAA's highest honors, celebrating student-athletes who embody athletic excellence, academic achievement, and Christ-like character. Hines becomes the latest in a distinguished lineage of players who model leadership, service, and faith.

Other Finalist:
• Noah Chan, University of Northwestern
