Lady Lions Battle in SAC Opener, Fall in Hard-Fought Doubleheader

February 25, 2025

Waxahachie, TX – The Nelson University Lady Lions opened Sooner Athletic Conference (SAC) play with a tough doubleheader against Oklahoma City University at the Lions Athletic Complex on Tuesday evening. Despite showing grit and determination, the Lady Lions fell in both contests against the visiting Stars.

Game 1
Nelson University came out strong in the opening game, striking first in the bottom of the first inning as Sasha Jennings crossed home plate following a clutch RBI single from Brooke Kinniburgh. However, Oklahoma City quickly responded, capitalizing on defensive miscues to even the score in the second.

The Lady Lions fought to keep pace, but OCU's offense found momentum in the later innings, adding insurance runs in the fifth, sixth, and seventh frames. Despite hits from Jennings, Trista Ford, and Avery Coleman, Nelson was unable to rally, falling 6-1.

On the mound, Natalie Zamora put in a strong six-inning performance, allowing five earned runs on eight hits while striking out one. Valerie Guzman closed out the game, pitching a scoreless seventh inning.

Game 2
The second game of the evening was a nail-biting pitcher's duel, as both teams remained scoreless through six innings. Nelson's Trinity Muhle kept the Oklahoma City bats quiet, allowing just one run on six hits while striking out one across a complete seven-inning outing.

Unfortunately, the Lady Lions' offense struggled to find gaps against OCU's B. Alsip, who limited Nelson to five hits. In the top of the seventh, Oklahoma City broke through with a decisive RBI double, scoring the game's only run. Nelson fought back in the bottom half, but the Stars' defense held firm, sealing a 1-0 loss for the Lady Lions.
