Oklahoma City, OK — The Nelson University Lady Lions fought hard in Monday's road doubleheader against Sooner Athletic Conference powerhouse Oklahoma City University but came up just short in both contests, falling 3-1 in Game 1 and 5-4 in a heartbreaking walk-off loss in Game 2.
Game 1
Game 1 saw a pitcher's duel between Nelson's Valerie Guzman and OCU's E. Heron. Guzman allowed just three runs over six innings while striking out two and walking none. The Lions put together six hits—including a pair from Sasha Jennings and a double from Cylee Panell —but left key runners on base.
Jennings drove in Nelson's lone run in the fifth, bringing home Panell to momentarily tie the game 1-1. However, OCU's A. Rayburn responded in the bottom of the sixth with a clutch two-run homer that sealed the win for the Stars.
Game 2Â
The nightcap featured a resilient Nelson squad that struck for four runs over the middle innings and carried a 4-3 lead into the bottom of the sixth. A wild finish saw the Lions tie it up in the fourth and hold strong until a walk-off solo home run by OCU's T. Paul in the seventh dashed Nelson's upset bid.
Madyson Wiggins led the way at the plate with a 3-for-4 performance, while Avery Coleman delivered a two-RBI single in the third to cap off a three-run rally. Trinity Muhle, who entered in relief of Natalie Zamora, was charged with the loss despite allowing just two runs over 1.2 innings.
Nelson's bats stayed hot with nine hits, and the Lady Lions capitalized on five OCU defensive errors, but the final bounce didn't go their way.
