Lady Lions Rally for Five-Set Victory Over John Brown

September 19, 2025

Waxahachie, TX – It was a rollercoaster night inside the Sheaffer Center, but the Nelson University Lady Lions showed their resilience and home-court grit. After dropping the first two sets, Nelson stormed back to take down John Brown University (Ark.) in a thrilling five-set battle, 3–2 (23–25, 22–25, 25–20, 25–14, 15–11).

The Golden Eagles came out swinging, grabbing a tight 25–23 win in the opener before edging Nelson again, 25–22, in the second. Nelson looked to be in a deep hole, down 0–2, but never wavered in front of an energetic trivia night crowd.

With their backs against the wall, the Lady Lions ignited in the third set. Samantha Moore delivered a scorching .500 hitting percentage with 13 kills, while Mackenzie Smith hammered 14 kills at a .407 clip. Nelson took the third set 25–20, then dominated the fourth 25–14 behind balanced offense and suffocating defense.

The decisive fifth set was all about composure. Alexandra Bonnett came through with 14 kills and timely swings, while the defense led by libero Taylor Felux's 9 digs and 3 aces from the service line kept the momentum rolling. Nelson closed out the frame 15–11 to complete the comeback win.
