Waxahachie, TX – The Nelson University Lady Lions volleyball team showed fire on the road this weekend, grinding out a five-set thriller at Wayland Baptist before powering past Oklahoma Panhandle State in straight sets to notch a perfect 2-0 road swing in Sooner Athletic Conference (SAC) play.
Friday
The road trip opened with fireworks in Plainview as Nelson squared off with perennial SAC contender Wayland Baptist. The Lady Lions came out sharp, cruising through the opening set 25–12 behind clean ball control and a dominant attack. Wayland responded, though, stealing momentum in the middle sets to push Nelson to the brink.
With the match tied 2–2, everything came down to a decisive fifth set. Nelson's veterans stepped up, with Caroline Boone hammering down 17 kills on a blistering .412 hitting percentage, while Addison Standley (16 kills, .297) and Alexandra Bonnett (13 kills, 19 digs) gave the Lady Lions balance at the net and in the back row. Setter Taylor Cavazos dished out 31 assists and libero Chloe Muñoz anchored the defense with 23 digs.
In the end, Nelson dug deep to finish strong, taking the deciding frame 15–11 to secure a 3–2 victory.
Saturday
Less than 24 hours later, Nelson showed no signs of fatigue in Goodwell, OK, against OPSU. From the opening serve, the Lady Lions controlled the pace and never let up, posting a clean 3–0 sweep (26–24, 25–16, 25–22).
The offense was unstoppable, led by Mackenzie Smith (14 kills, .583) and Samantha Moore (11 kills, .588), who shredded the Aggie defense with efficiency. Bonnett added 7 more kills, while Standley chipped in 8. Cavazos once again set the tone with 22 assists, and Muñoz tallied 15 digs to keep rallies alive.
Nelson outhit OPSU .301 to .208 on the day, closing out the weekend with confidence and composure.
