Waxahachie, TX – The Nelson University Lady Lions women's soccer team delivered one of their most impressive performances of the season on Tuesday night, blanking No. 7–NCCCAA ranked Southwestern Christian University (SCU) 3–0 in a Sooner Athletic Conference (SAC) showdown at the Lions Athletic Complex.
Coming into the match, the Lions had momentum on their side. Star forward Daisy Altamirano, fresh off claiming her second straight SAC Offensive Player of the Week honor, continued to anchor the attack for a Nelson squad that had just received votes in the NCCAA National Standings. With conference positioning on the line, the Lady Lions rose to the challenge, seizing a signature win that vaulted them into the top spot in the SAC rankings.
The breakthrough came in the 37th minute when Daisy Ruiz pounced on a loose ball and drilled home the opening goal, sparking celebrations across the pitch. Just minutes later, Altamirano stamped her name on the score sheet, finishing in the 42nd to double the Lions' advantage before halftime.
Nelson's defense, led by Mackenzie Gonzalez, Ashanti Avellaneda, and goalkeeper Delaney Murphy, locked down SCU's nationally ranked attack, limiting them to just three total shots and two on frame. Murphy recorded a pair of saves in 81 minutes of action before Anna Amara closed out the shutout between the posts.
In the 77th minute, Azucena Garcia put the exclamation point on the night with a well-taken strike that sealed the 3–0 victory and sent the Lady Lions' bench into a frenzy.
With a balanced attack; 13 total shots, six on goal and a disciplined defense that never let SCU settle, Nelson proved they are ready to contend with the nation's best.
The win improves Nelson to 7-1-2 overall and 2-0 in SAC play, while Southwestern Christian drops to 8-1-1, 1-1 SAC.
