Victoria, TX – The Nelson University Lions men's soccer team hit the road Friday for a non-conference showdown at The Cage against A&M–Victoria, and they returned to Waxahachie with a statement 3–1 victory.
The Lions wasted little time asserting themselves. In the 19th minute, Sergio Lopez Garcia broke through with a nasty goal, finishing off an assist from Yael Sandoval to put Nelson on the board.
Just before halftime, the Lions doubled their lead when Makel Mitchell buried a strike off a setup from Joel Palmer, sending Nelson into the break up 2–0. A&M–Victoria fought back in the second half, cutting the deficit in the 81st minute when Josh Loveridge scored off an assist from Murray Brieley. But Nelson quickly responded, sealing the match in the 89th minute.
Angel Cruz found the net with help from Jonathan Ledesma, capping off a balanced team performance.
The Lions dominated the stat sheet, firing 16 shots with 8 on target compared to just 8 attempts for the Jaguars. Nelson also earned 12 corner kicks, consistently keeping pressure on the home side's back line. Nelson goalkeeper Yahir Perez anchored the defense with two key saves.
