Lady Lions Suffer Tough 3-2 Loss to Wayland Baptist

Plainview, TX — The Nelson Women's Soccer team traveled out west to Plainview, Texas, looking to open conference play in the Sooner Athletic Conference with a win against the Wayland Baptist Pioneers. However, the Lions fell just short, losing to the Pioneers 3-2.

The Lady Lions were the first team to get on the board after freshman Jaylene Bosquez found the back of the net in the 22nd minute, giving the Lions an early 1-0 lead.

But, Nelson did not hold onto the lead for long, as the Pioneers responded with a goal in the 28th minute to tie the game at 1-1.

After Wayland Baptist's goal, neither team was able to score before halftime. Nelson regained the lead in the 66th minute when senior Samantha Delgado scored off an assist from sophomore Daisy Ruiz, putting the Lady Lions back in front 2-1.

However, the Pioneers once again fought back, scoring two unanswered goals. Wayland Baptist tied the game in the 72nd minute before taking its first lead of the match in the 83rd minute. The late goal ultimately gave the Pioneers the 3-2 victory and handed the Lady Lions a tough loss.

Nelson and Wayland Baptist remained even in the shots category, with both teams recording 15 shots in the match. The Lady Lions actually finished with more shots on goal, recording 12 compared to the Pioneers' 10, but Nelson was unable to turn those opportunities into enough goals.

Goalkeeper Delaney Murphy kept the Lions in contention throughout the match, recording six saves on the day.
