Oklahoma City, OK — The Lady Lions volleyball team opened their two-game road stretch in Oklahoma with a statement, extending their red-hot winning streak to eight matches with a commanding 3-1 victory over Oklahoma City University.
When heading into a multi-game road trip, especially one featuring two conference matchups, starting with momentum is crucial. And what better way to gain that momentum than by beating the team sitting right behind you in second place in the Sooner Athletic Conference standings!
Nelson set the tone early, taking the first two sets against the Oklahoma City Stars by scores of 25-19 and 25-10. With their backs against the wall, the Stars responded in the third set, edging the Lady Lions 25-22. However, Nelson quickly shut down any momentum Oklahoma City had gained, regaining control in the fourth set and closing out the match with a 3-1 victory.
Offensively, junior
Caroline Boone led the way with 16 kills, followed closely by sophomore
Addison Standley with 15. To add to the attack, freshman
Keara Savory-Calbo also applied the pressure, adding seven kills of her own to help keep the Lady Lions' offense rolling.
Defensively, freshman
Savannah Bergman anchored the net leading the block category with seven blocks, while Boone and Savory-Calbo each contributed four.
When it came to keeping the ball alive, the Lady Lions' senior leadership stepped up, with all three seniors making an impact in the digs category.
Chloe Munoz led the way with 16 digs, while
Cassidy Hargesheimer and
Hailey Nixon each recorded 11.
Hargesheimer also helped orchestrate the offense, leading the team in the assist category with 23 assists, while freshman
Ashlyn Cavazos added 17 and Munoz contributed seven. Keeping the pressure alive,
Taylor Felux had an impeccable day from the service line, leading the Lady Lions with four aces, while Hargesheimer and Munoz each added two of their own.
