Lady Lions Split on Day 1 of the NCCAA World Series

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Kansas City, MO – SAGU Softball split their first two games on the first day of pool play at the 2022 NCCAA World Series hosted at the Kansas City Urban Youth Academy in Kansas City, Missouri. The Lady Lions fought hard in both game as they fell 9-8 to Arlington Baptist in the bottom of the seventh inning, but they responded well to take a 6-4 victory over Hannibal-LaGrange University. SAGU will now face Columbia International in their third and final pool game of the NCCAA World Series at 10:00 AM tomorrow. The Lady Lions will then wait to see if they place in first or second in their pool, which will allow them to advance to the semi-finals of the NCCAA World Series. The semi-final games are set to take place tomorrow at 4:00 PM and 6:00 PM after the conclusion of the determining pool games.

Game One
 
SAGU Softball's lead would slip away in the bottom of the seventh inning as Arlington Baptist scored four runs to walk it off in dramatic fashion over the Lady Lions, taking the 9-8 victory. The Patriots never recorded an out in the bottom of the seventh inning as six straight batters reached safely.
 
SAGU got on the board in the first inning as Illeana Salinas singled on a 1-1 count, scoring Airiana Magdaleno. The Lady Lions would go on to score four runs in the sixth inning as the offensive onslaught was led by Rosie Guadarrama who belted her first homerun of the season to give SAGU the 8-5 lead.
 
Autumn Graham was in the circle for the Lady Lions. The ace would go 6.0 innings pitched, allowing 12 hits and 8 runs, striking out 5 and walking 3.
 
The Lady Lions tallied 10 hits in the game. Guadarrama, Salinas, and Magdaleno all collected multiple hits for SAGU. They were led by Guadarrama who went 3-for-4 at the plate.
 
Game Two
 
SAGU Softball weathered a push by Hannibal LaGrange in the seventh inning after the Trojans recorded three straight hits to load the bases and push across one run to make it 6-4. Sarah Sanders would come up big in right field as she laid out to make a diving catch, saving the tying run from scoring and ending the inning, giving SAGU the 6-4 victory.
 
SAGU's offense was humming throughout the game as the Lady Lions were able to push across runs in five of their seven innings played. SAGU would push across their first run in the top of second inning as Rosie Guadarrama belted her second homerun of the NCCAA World Series, giving the Lady Lions a 1-0 lead. In the top of the third inning, SAGU would extend their lead as Makyla Kelly scored on Illeana Salinas' single to center field. SAGU was able to push another run across the board in the top of the fourth on Kassandra Vargas' solo homerun, but the Trojans would respond with three runs of their own in the bottom of the fourth to make it a 4-3 ballgame. It wasn't until the sixth inning where the Lady Lions would score again as Ashlyn Teran would single with two outs to score Brooke Kinnibrugh. The Lady Lions would go on to score one more run in the top of the seventh and stifle the Trojans' attempted comeback.
 
Kassandra Vargas would start in the pitcher's circle for the Lady Lions as well as blast a solo homerun in the top of the fourth inning. The righthander went 3.0 innings pitched, allowing 2 hits and 3 runs while striking out 2 and walking 2. Ashlyn Teran would enter the game and pick up the win for the Lady Lions. The lefthander went 4.0 innings pitched, allowing 6 hits and 1 run while striking out 1 and walking 0.
 
Makyla Kelly led the Lady Lions offensively, going 3-for-4 in the game and scoring the first run for SAGU. Ashlyn Teran, Rosie Guadarrama, McKenzie Schulze, and Brooke Kinnibrugh each recorded multiple hits for SAGU. Guadarrama would homer in the second inning, marking her second homerun of the day.

 Rosie Guadarrama homers twice on day one of the NCCAA World Series. These homeruns mark the first for Guadarrama during the 2022 season and the third of her career. 

The Lady Lions will now face Columbia International tomorrow at 10:00 AM in their third and final pool game of the NCCAA World Series. SAGU will then wait to find out what their seeding is in pool play, which will determine whether they advance to the semi-finals of the NCCAA World Series.
