Joseph Chavez The Heart of Nelson University’s Defense Earns All-American Honors

December 23, 2024

Waxahachie, TX – Nelson University Lions Football team's senior nose guard, Joseph "Jojo" Chavez, has solidified his place among the best in the nation with an exceptional 2024 season that earned him a spot on the prestigious 2024 AFCA NAIA Coaches' All-America Second Team-Defense.

Chavez's accolades don't stop there. The defensive powerhouse was also recognized as a Victory Sports Network All-American Honorable Mention and garnered a Sooner Athletic Conference First-Team All-Conference selection.

Known for his ability to clog lanes and disrupt offensive plays, Chavez played a pivotal role in the Lions' defensive success this season. His dominance on the field was reflected in his conference-leading 83 tackles as a nose guard, an extraordinary feat for his position.

"Jojo had an incredible season. He was the stalwart that allowed us to play the defense we did. For a nose to have 80+ tackles in a season is unprecedented and a testament to his determination. His commitment to the team this year will be felt for years to come," said Nelson University Head Football Coach Jared Hudgins.

Chavez's leadership anchored the Lions' defense, enabling them to compete fiercely throughout the season. His efforts epitomize what it means to be a Lion, leaving a lasting legacy that will inspire future players to aim for excellence on and off the field.

As Chavez wraps up his collegiate career, his impact on Nelson University Athletics—and his opponents—will not soon be forgotten.
