Lions Hire Offensive & Defensive Coordinators: Hudgins Finds His Guys In Blake McCulloch & Gennard Johnson

April 17, 2024

Waxahachie, TX - As the Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) Lions gear up for the 2024 football season, they've made significant moves in their coaching staff, signaling a renewed commitment to excellence on the gridiron. Leading the charge is first-year Head Coach Jared Hudgins, who has assembled a dynamic team of coordinators poised to elevate the Lions' performance to new heights.

Returning to his alma mater, SAGU graduate Blake McCulloch takes the reins as Offensive Coordinator. McCulloch brings a wealth of experience, having previously coached running backs and fullbacks at SAGU from 2016 to 2018. His recent tenure at Tioga ISD saw him serve as Assistant Head Coach and Offensive Coordinator, where he spearheaded the team to historic achievements, including the school's first-ever playoff win and the shattering of eight offensive records. Coach McCulloch's return injects the Lions' offense with a potent blend of strategy, tempo, and meticulous attention to detail, promising an electrifying offensive display on the field.

On the defensive front, Gennard Johnson makes a triumphant return to SAGU after a successful stint from 2017 to 2021. With a master's degree in education under his belt, Johnson's expertise as Defensive Run Game Coordinator and Defensive Line Coach contributed significantly to the team's No. 1 ranking in the Sooner Athletic Conference run defense in 2019. Now assuming the role of Defensive Coordinator, Johnson's strategic skill set and unwavering dedication to excellence will shape the Lions' defensive identity. His leadership, coupled with a commitment to mentorship both on and off the field, embodies the ethos of SAGU football.

Head Coach Jared Hudgins expresses his excitement for the additions to the coaching staff, highlighting their shared values of faith, leadership, and mentorship. "Coach Johnson brings great energy and defensive expertise, while Coach McCulloch adds tempo and precision to our offensive strategy," says Hudgins. "More than just coaches, they exemplify Christlike values and are committed to shaping young men both athletically and spiritually."
