Waxahachie, TX — Last weekend's football season opener between Nelson University and MidAmerica Nazarene University wasn't just a contest between two programs, it was also a proud reminder of the long-term impact Nelson Football continues to have on the game.
On the sidelines for MNU stood Venique Benton, a former standout for the Lions and now a rising star in the coaching ranks as the Defensive Coordinator for the Pioneers.
Benton was a dependable force in the Lions' secondary known for his sharp football instincts, physical play, and steady leadership. A true student of the game, he earned his Bachelor's in Business Sport Management from Nelson University, where his discipline and drive laid the foundation for his coaching career. Since joining the MNU coaching staff, Benton has taken command of the defensive unit with a vision rooted in discipline, toughness, and execution. He's helped shape a group that reflects his mindset: aggressive, locked in, and prepared.
Though the jersey is different now, Benton's identity as a Nelson Lion remains firmly intact. His progression from player to coach serves as a powerful example of the lasting influence of the Nelson University experience.
