Waxahachie, TX | February 18, 2026– Championships are measured in banners, but legacy is built in impact. For the second consecutive season, the Nelson University men's and women's basketball programs proved that their greatest assists don't always show up in the box score.
Through a special partnership with Life School Red Oak, Nelson student-athletes stepped into a different kind of role this year as pen pals, mentors, encouragers, and role models to a vibrant class of third graders. What began as handwritten letters filled with drawings, jokes, Bible verses, and words of affirmation quickly grew into something far deeper than anyone anticipated.
Over the course of the season, Lions shared stories about balancing school and athletics, overcoming adversity, and chasing dreams with discipline. In return, the young Mustangs responded with colorful artwork, thoughtful questions, and unfiltered encouragement that fueled Nelson players during the grind of conference play.
The result? Real relationships. Real mentorship. Real magic.
For Nelson basketball alum Bralyn Thomas, the experience became life-changing.
"What began as simple penpal letters grew into one of the most meaningful relationships in my life, something I never could have imagined," Thomas shared. "It started when I wrote to their son, telling him how incredible he is, especially through the challenges he faces, and how inspiring his journey and impact truly is. I expressed that he is such a star and my hope was that one day we could meet."
Not long after, that hope became reality.
"They reached out to me, and from that moment our bond grew in ways I never expected. They became more than penpals, they became my family away from home. Even with miles between us, they've shown up for me in ways that deeply touched my heart. During basketball season, they stood by me through every high and low, encouraging me when I felt tired, believing in me when I doubted myself, and celebrating every step of my journey as if it were their own."
For Thomas, the connection transcended basketball.
"Our connection became rooted in love, trust, and genuine care. Their unconditional support showed me that family is not defined by blood or distance, but by who stands with you, believes in you, and never lets you feel alone. No matter where life takes me, they will always be my family and I'm forever grateful and thankful for them."
Moments like these are exactly why Nelson Athletics continues to invest in initiatives that extend beyond competition. The pen pal program reinforces a core pillar of the Lions' hoops culture: character plus competence. It teaches student-athletes that influence is responsibility, leadership is service, and impact is eternal.

This season's letter exchanges culminated in in-person meetups, hugs at games, group photos on the hardwood, and unforgettable memories for both the Lions and their young Mustang friends. For the third graders, it meant seeing college athletes not just as stars, but as approachable mentors. For the Lions, it was a powerful reminder that their platform matters.
