Lady Lions Split Day Two with Statement Shutout at SCS Invitational

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Mesquite, TX | February 6, 2026 — The Nelson University Lady Lions softball team returned to the dirt Friday for day two of the Southern Collegiate Sports Invitational, grinding through a tough morning test before answering back with a dominant afternoon performance to close the day on a high note.

Game One
The morning opener demanded patience and resilience as Nelson squared off with Ottawa University. After a quiet start at the plate, the Lady Lions found sparks in the middle innings. Cadence Hopgood delivered the biggest swing of the game for Nelson, launching a solo home run to put the Lions on the board and inject momentum into the dugout. Elena Mendez added pressure on the base paths with two stolen bases, while Layla Oliver and Avery Coleman chipped in hits as Nelson continued to compete pitch by pitch.

Ottawa capitalized on a big fourth inning to create separation, but the Lady Lions never backed down. Hopgood's blast and continued defensive grit kept Nelson swinging until the final out, showcasing the team's fight even when the scoreboard tilted away.

Game Two
If the opener was about perseverance, the nightcap was about poise.

Behind a masterful complete-game shutout in the circle, the Lady Lions authored one of their cleanest performances of the young season. The pitching was electric, allowing just one hit while striking out nine and retiring Oklahoma Wesleyan hitters with a calm, commanding presence all seven innings.

Offensively, Nelson saved its roar for the seventh.

With the game locked in a scoreless duel, the Lady Lions broke through in emphatic fashion. A clutch two-RBI triple ignited the rally, and Nelson tacked on an insurance run moments later to turn a tense chess match into a decisive 3–0 victory. The Lions finished with seven hits, flawless defense, and zero errors, a complete team effort that underlined their growth and grit.

When the final out settled into a glove, it was a statement win.
