Nelson Track & Field Makes History with Record-Breaking Performances in First-Ever Home Invitational

Waxahachie, TX | March 20, 2026 — The stage was set at the Lions Athletic Complex, and history didn't just arrive, it roared.

For the first time in Nelson University history, the program hosted a track & field meet on its home surface, welcoming programs from across the region for the 2026 Nelson Invitational. From the opening throws in the morning air to the final strides under the evening sky, the day carried a different kind of energy rooted in pride, progress, and ownership. This wasn't just another meet on the calendar. This was a moment years in the making.

The defining moment of the day came soaring through the air. Standout Latrel Davis delivered a performance that will be remembered for years to come, exploding down the runway and landing at 7.05 meters in the long jump, officially breaking the Nelson University program record. As if that wasn't enough, Davis returned to the apron and cleared 1.92 meters in the high jump, securing another first-place finish and stamping his name across two events in a historic home debut.

That same tone carried into the field events, where the Lions showed strength, depth, and consistency. Ishmeal Ealoms anchored the throws group with a commanding first-place finish in the discus (45.96m) and a second-place mark in the hammer (46.10m), setting the pace early in the day. Around him, the group stacked performances—Houn Hib battled through both hammer and discus, while Jaxon Salzman added a strong discus mark before turning heads elsewhere. On the women's side, Jaylyn Kechter delivered a complete day with second-place finishes in both the discus (40.76m) and javelin (30.11m), while also contributing in the hammer. Kai Taylor, Skylar Morris, and Zoey Hensley added depth across multiple throwing and jumping events, reinforcing a unit that competed with toughness from start to finish.

If the throws set the tone, the jumps elevated it. The Lions dominated the air all afternoon. Alongside Davis' record-breaking day, Brandon Clark delivered one of the most complete performances of the meet, capturing first place in the triple jump (14.75m) and following it up with a second-place finish in the long jump (7.02m). Jaxon Salzman continued his standout day by clearing 4.40 meters in the pole vault, earning first place, while also claiming gold in the javelin (41.64m), a rare and impressive double. Hudson Woods and Josiah Wentrcek added key points in the high jump, both clearing 1.87 meters to finish among the top competitors, while also contributing across other events including hurdles and horizontal jumps. Every event, every flight, the Lions were present.

When the meet shifted to the track, the energy didn't drop. In the men's 100 meters, Hagen Darney exploded out of the blocks to claim second place (10.70), with Hunter Morgan right behind in third (10.79), giving Nelson a strong presence in one of the fastest events of the day. The women matched that intensity in the sprints, led by Leanna Jackson, who powered her way to first place in the 200 meters (26.18). She was followed closely by teammate Bella Jeffreys, who finished second (27.14) and later returned for a strong showing in the 400 meters. Khloe Johnson and Safyra Santos added depth in both the 100m and 200m, while Autumn Crouch contributed across events, showing versatility that carried over from her first-place javelin performance (37.13m) earlier in the day.

The hurdles demanded discipline, and the Lions answered with execution. Robyn Puente delivered one of the most impressive double performances on the track, placing second in the 100m hurdles (16.17) before returning to capture first place in the 400m hurdles (1:05.56) with strength down the stretch. Anna Abshier added a strong showing in both hurdle events, while Josiah Wentrcek represented on the men's side in the 110m hurdles, competing with grit against a tough field.

Jesus Flores controlled the pace in the men's 10,000 meters, pulling away to secure first place (39:05.61) in a commanding performance. Teammates Ezra Perez and Emmanuel Franco followed with second and third-place finishes, completing a dominant sweep for the Lions. Flores and Perez returned later in the day to lead Nelson again in the 1500 meters, finishing second and third, while Franco added another strong effort. On the women's side, Analia Menendez and Betzaidy Najera battled stride-for-stride in the 10,000 meters, finishing second and third, while also contributing in the 1500 alongside Kylie Adams, who secured a second-place finish, and a group that showed resilience from start to finish.

And then, as the meet reached its final moment, the Lions closed it the right way.

In the women's 4x400 relay, the quartet of Robyn Puente, Miranda Sosa, Anna Abshier, and Reese Perkins took the track with one goal… finish strong. And they did exactly that, pulling away down the final stretch to claim first place (4:19.70), bringing the day full circle with a statement finish in front of a home crowd.

From record-breaking jumps to dominant distance races, from explosive sprints to disciplined hurdles, every event told the same story: Nelson Track & Field has arrived.

The first home meet in program history is no longer a vision, it's a standard.

And after a day like this, it's clear…

This is just the beginning.
