SAGU beats Friends University to remain unbeaten

San Antonio, TX – Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) Lady Lions Volleyball team ended tourney play against Friends University in the San Antonio ShinDig Tournament Saturday, August 27th.

SAGU (8-0, 0-0) defeated Friends University (2-5) in 4 sets, 25-23, 25-18, 25-16 and 27-17

Lion Review

  • With an early 12-6 lead, the Falcons doubled the Lions' point total in the opening set. Despite a late surge by SAGU, the Falcons won the opening set 25-23.

  • In the second set, SAGU would establish their rhythm. Emma Tompkins sealed the set victory with a kill.

  • The third set, which SAGU won 25-16, saw the SAGU rhythm continue.

  • A Falcons service error in the fourth and final set would be the game's final fault.

More from Moore: "This was a good weekend for our kids. We faced some good competition and overcame some tough situations. Last night's five set match with OLLU took a lot out of our kids. Getting back to the hotel at 11:00 pm and having our supper delivered at 11:30 pm made for a short night of sleep. Then today we had to play an early match. That kind of stuff gives you a big mental test. But, our kids passed the test. 8-0 is a great start to the season," SAGU Head Volleyball Coach Hank Moore said.

"I'm very proud of how our kids overcame obstacles and kept fighting. We have a great group of girls that represent SAGU with great class. I'm one proud coach," Moore went on to say.
