SAGU triumphs over MACU amidst a rowdy Evangel home crowd

Box Score

September 16th, 2022

Oklahoma City, OK: The Lady Lions volleyball team from Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) visited Mid-America Christian University (MACU) in their first away conference game at the Gaulke Activity Center.

In a compelling clash between two stronger teams in the Sooner Athletic Conference (SAC), the SAGU Lady Lions would remain unbeaten, defeating MACU in front of a passionate Evangel home crowd.

SAGU (13-0, 5-0) beat MACU (9-5, 3-2) in 4 sets, 25-23, 25-20, 25-21 and 25-20

Lion Review

  • MACU could block three shots compared to the Lady Lions' 0 in the first set and accumulate seven fewer errors to win the opening set.

  • With their impressive blocks in the second set, Karena Tipton and Ava Myers denied the Evangel attackers by building a roof over the net.

  • The Lady Lions' defense at the net would prove crucial as they reduced Evangel's hitting percentage from .224 to .088, winning the second set courtesy of a service dump from Madison Petten.

  • Emma Tompkins' back row attack would start the Lady Lion's scoring spree in the third set.

  • With sky-high kills, Lilly Hanna and Alexandra Bonnett retook the lead in a back-and-forth struggle.

  • Tessa Glick would repeatedly find herself digging Evangel assaults.

  • A kill by Emma Tompkins broke through an Evangel block wall.

  • After Bonnett's kill completed the third set, the Lady Lions team gave a fervent cheer.

  • The fourth set would begin with the MACU team passing erratically, and SAGU would capitalize on the MACU mistakes.

  • Tessa Glick's magical back-to-back service aces and an Emma Tompkins kill brought the Lady Lions' fourth and final set to a close.

More from Moore:

"13-0. Our kids played hard. We got some really good plays from Lilly Hanna and Samantha Rico. I'm proud that they found a way to overcome poor play with great effort. Tessa Glick had 30 digs which kept us in a lot of points. Our middles all had great matches defensively. Emma had four assist blocks and one solo block. Karena had three assist blocks, and Lilly had a solo block and an assist block. Lilly had nine kills and hit .368. Those numbers are huge. We served tough! 13 aces. Tessa had 4, Lily and Riley both had 3. Tessa may have been the player of the game. Thirty digs, four aces, and a 100% on passing 12/12," SAGU Head Volleyball Coach Hank Moore said.

The Next Step

On the back half of their conference away game road trip, SAGU (13-0, 5-0) will travel to take on the University of Science and Arts (USAO) on Saturday, September 17.
