Waxahachie, TX – As the Nelson University Lady Lions women's soccer team gears up for the start of Sooner Athletic Conference (SAC) competition, expectations are high for another thrilling season. Currently holding a record of 5-4, the Lady Lions are set to open conference play with a challenging road game against the University of Science and Arts in Chickasha, Oklahoma, on September 28th at 4:00 PM.
Head Coach Cesar España is optimistic about the team's potential this season. "We are very excited for this coming season to continue to build on the success from last year," he stated. "With the addition of some key players, we are confident in what's ahead for this program. This team has depth and lots of quality. This coming season we will see it all come together to achieve new heights."
Last Season Recap and Key Achievements
The Lady Lions enjoyed a remarkable 2023 season, finishing 5th in the SAC and advancing to the quarterfinals of the SAC Championship. Their success carried into the NCCAA National Championship, where they clinched the runner-up position after a stellar performance that included defeating the former national champions with a dominant 3-0 victory.
The team set a new record with 65 goals scored over the season, averaging 3.25 goals per game. Notable players like Anna Bewley and Stephanie Hernandez were key contributors, with Bewley netting 28 goals and Hernandez adding 18 to her tally. Both players ranked among the top scorers in the NAIA, SAC and NCCAA.
Player Awards and Academic Excellence
The Lady Lions also shone academically, with the team earning the SAC All-Academic Scholar Team honors with an impressive 3.54 GPA. Individually, players were recognized for their excellence on the field, including Bewley's selection as SAC Freshman of the Year and Zoe Boldt being named SAC Goalkeeper of the Year.

New Faces Adding Depth
The Lady Lions have bolstered their squad with several talented transfers and incoming freshmen, including standout players like Daisy Altamirano (Hill College) and Xitlali Avila (Hartnell College). Additionally, newcomers from top club teams like Tanner Sorenson, Stephanie Arreola, and Jade Reyes bring valuable experience from playing in national competitions.
With a strong core of returning players and an exciting group of newcomers, the Lady Lions are poised to make noise in the SAC this season.
